Calling for case studies: how are you using social networks in work with young people?

For the next part of the Youth Work and Social Networking research I'm hoping to put together a range of case studies on how youth services have engaged with online social networking. For example:

Has your service set up profiles on a social network?

Have you build your own bespoke social network? Or built social networking features into existing websites?

Do you offer training / advice sessions to young people on safe social networking?

Have you had staff training on using social networks?

Do you use social networks to promote positive activities in your youth service?

Are you engaging with social networks in some other way?

If so - drop me a line or drop a reply in here.

I'm particularly interested in:

*What you did and where the idea came from

*What benefits it has brought, and what the challenges have been in getting it to work

*The one thing you would do differently if you were starting the project again today

*The one thing you would definitely keep the same

I'm aiming to write up as many case studies as I can - and to feature them in the final report (which will be a lot more accessible / visually appealing than the interim paper...)

Hi Tim,
Hope the new course is going well.
I work for the National Deaf Children's Society and we use social media to engage deaf children and young people. Social Media is wonderful why because it allows everyone who engages with it an equal platform. The fact that you have a disability doesn't matter you can get involved, tell the world what you think and share your views.
Where did we start, well with young people and what they were using already and what their wants were. They told us that they felt massively issolated often never meeting another deaf young person. As 90% are in mainstream schools.
So we worked with 6 schools over a year to build the Buzz you can check it out at www.buzz.org.uk.The first national website that brings deaf children and young people from all over the UK together.
The website has stories from deaf young people, activities and events, polls and a ask a question function.
The benefits have been huge young people now have one place in which they can meet other deaf young people, check out activities and events, seek help and support. We currently have 980 members using the site.
Challenges very few, but putting practices in place to safeguard young people using the site took time and moderating the site to make sure everyone has an equal place. We run sessions with deaf young people on Internet safety and keeping themselves safe online.
I am not sure what I would do differently, feed back from young people has been really positive and the activity on the site fantatsic. I would probably consider how deaf young people with other disabilities can engage with the site. Doing this retrospectively can be a lot more expensive. Knowing who you want to engage with is important, it isn't one way traffic what will you offer to the young people who get involved.
I would definitely keep young people in the driving seat they use this technology day in and out they know what they need and want.
Be prepared though once you start the possibilities are endless enjoy and have fun

Using Creative Assessment Tools for Practitioners at Attlee Youth & Community Centre, London E1

April 11, 2013 from 9:30am to 4:30pm
BackgroundOne of the challenges of assessment processes with young people is how to secure their involvement and active participation. Only too often assessment can become something that is ‘done’ to young people (or a form that needs  to be filled in), rather than a dynamic process that puts them at the centre, something theyare involved with and have some ownership over. The assessment tools called ‘CAF Cards’  and ‘Road Sign Cards’ have been developed with young people to work with the…See More
