Exploring youth engagement in a digital age
Hi Everyone
I'm sure many of you will seen that a father in Northern Ireland is bringing a case against Facebook (and the local care trust) for allowing his 12 year old daughter to post suggestive photos on the site.
This is again raising the question of who is responsible (legally or morally) for young people's safety in online spaces - I think the answer is "it's a combination of people & organisations". As well as this I assume that is the care trust (who had parental responsibility for the girl in question at the time) is found to be accountable, this could have implications for local authorities and other organisations across the country I imagine.
I've written a bit of a blog post here and would welcome people's thoughts. Also, for anyone up north, I'm going to be speaking at Preston Social on the 27th September 2011 on this topic (with a debate of attendees afterwards) - tickets aren't out yet but I'll update when they are.
Look forward to hearing people's thoughts!
Cheers
Duncan
