Exploring youth engagement in a digital age
Hi everyone
I'm helping a local authority out on a voluntary basis with their youth council - mainly around using digital.
I've got some simple plans - which mainly draw on my experience of digital participation generally.
Am wondering if anyone has any nice examples of good digital work with youth councils or any ideas for things that might work?
Thanks!

I work with York Youth Council, we have tried a few things ... we set up a NING site for youth councillors to be able to work together privately on line ... but it didn't really work as they didn't want to log in seperately. We now have a facebook group instead. Although I'm not sure how effective this has been- emaila nd text still seems to eb the most effective way to communicate witht eh youth coucillors. We mainly focus on using the website - but have used survey monkey to create surveys that we then ask the youth councillors to curculate using facebook- or school intranet systems. This has worked well for some issues (bus fare costs and quality of services, but not so well for others- voting for a youth cafe design). It's partly about how important the issue is to them, and also to depends on the young people you have involved - and how they use facebook- we had a couple who were naturally inclined towards 'media relations' and had a strong 'public persona' online- others only really use it with a small circle of friends.
There is quite a lot of pressure to set up twitter from teh youth councillors at the minute- I'm working on this, but need to ensure we comply with coporate approaches. I think the thing we struggel with most is getting the young epople to put up new content on whatever site. There is a tension between doing the work and telling people about it. We seem to lean towards the doing most of the time.
We are also working on developing a new youth website in the area and are hoping to build participation, and youth council involvement into this, having a regular poll/ survey, as well as discussion board and links to getting involved.
