Brief bio: tell us a few facts about you & your interest in digital aspects of work with young people
I'm an independent researcher / consultation / participation practitioner who has found himself working a lot around young people and technology.

A typical working week (not that such things exist) might find me writing a guide on using social media tools for youth engagement, training youth workers in making the most of social networks, running an online course for activists in campaigning with internet video and researching something completely non-internet connected on youth policy or participation practice.

A typical week outside of work might find me spending a lot of time in the kitchen cooking, trying to get out for a good long walk somewhere or staring out of train windows at canals..

What should every digital innovation project know when planning to use tech to engage youth in communities?

Posted on April 4, 2012 at 13:18 0 Comments

I'm working on a crowd-sourced research project for Nominet Trust to explore how digital technologies can support young people to engage socially and economically with their communities - and I need your help.

  • Next Thursday (12th April) we've got a round-table event in London to explore key messages on using digital technology to engage young people. Drop me a line if you want an…

How to do Facebook REALLY well in local government: example from Monmouthshire

Just spotted this post on Helen Reynolds blog about using Facebook for communicating with young people.

It's an example from Monmouthshire, where Youthworker Dan Davies is engaging with over 500 young people through Facebook.

What are your Youth Work and the Internet predictions for 2012?

Posted on January 9, 2012 at 15:37 0 Comments

Last year was an interesting year for digital youth work. In some ways, the centrality of social media, the Internet and digital tools is becoming just an accepted part of the way youth work should take place - in other ways, we're still a long way from digital skills being mainstream - and although many initiatives are taking place across Europe to explore digital youth work they are taking place in pockets not altogether connected up.

But - instead of looking back - let's…

Social Media Policy Guide from New South Wales, Australia

Posted on December 15, 2011 at 14:53 0 Comments

I've just had a note from Dean Williamson, Policy Officer at YAPA, the Youth Action and Policy Association in New South Wales, Australia, sharing news of a new social media policy resource they have put together. Check out the link below...
Dean says:
We've developed a model policy guide for youth workers who wish to develop a policy around ethical social media use with young people.
We based it on our NSW Code of Ethics, but the…

Hi Tim - are we twittering/blogging publicly about this network yet?

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the comment. As a church we've used Facebook, MySpace and Bebo to a limited extent and have groups and such set-up, but have yet to really utilise these networks as actual tools for furthering our work. That's why I'm really interested in the discussion you've got going here.

I've had the odd exchange with other Web Editors in similar positions over the years, but I don't know if anyone's actually built up a group or anything. There's an active community around the e-democracy stuff, with newsletters, conferences etc. but it's a bit off topic for me. If you're interested in seeing any of that stuff, then http://dowire.org/ 's a likely place to start

Thanks for the messages Tim! I've got a lot of reading a head of me to get up to speed with you guys on Ning. I'll hopefully be able to contribute something useful once I've caught up with the ground you've already covered! Cheers!!

Hi Time,

The extended explanation of my research is on the research site: http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/spsw/holmes/about.html

Research site is a bit of an overstatement at the moment since everything's a bit dormant. I came across you and then the network whilst looking at the Youth Agency work you've done. I was wondering if you had any plans for survey research with young people to complement the study?

What a beautiful site you have created Tim! I am sure it will make a big difference to progressing your aims at increasing participation with young people. Really well done!! :)
