There are undoubtedly both positive and negative aspects to social media – but whatever our views – Youth Professionals need to understand the online activities and environments young people are engaging with. Explore both how to support young people as they engage in these environments; and how to creatively use social media and social networking to enh… Continue

Katie Bacon Where to start? One step @ a time...

One step @ a time....I have had numerous conversations with youth practitioners who have expressed frustration about the resistance and lack of interest from colleagues/local authority. Other professionals have expressed interest but feel overwhelmed about how and/or what level of ‘online engagement’ to start with and where to aim… Continue

Tim Davies An Intercontinental Conversation on Digital Youth Work

People are exploring Digital Youth Work all over the world - but often there are not many opportunities to bring the conversations together. To link up some of the work going on in different places, I've been talking with Merlyn Horton of Safe Online Outreach in Canada about holding a conference call between youth workers from the UK, and workers from Canada. The idea would be to spend about 90 minutes with up to six people on a call, exploring… Continue

Tim Davies What would you get if you had £500 to spend on a social media toolkit? (hardware)

I'm putting together a guide for the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council on using social media as part of a youth exchange, and I wanted to include in there an idea of what sort of social media kit you could put together if you had £500 to spend. Below is the list I've put together so far, but I was surprised to find it only comes to £440, and I think covers all the essentials I use in day-to-day social media work. What would you add? What would you social… Continue

Katie Bacon Online pornography and young people

This blog discusses topics of a sexual nature which some people may find offensive. I have been explicit about the subject matter to prevent ambiguity. I intend no offense, but want to be clear and explicit before you read the blog. One of the areas I am currently exploring is how social media platforms can be creatively utilised to eng… Continue

Linda Jane McLean Just a Handful of nails

I attended an excellent conference on collaboration recently. There were many words used, but at the end of the day, although collaboration can take our ideas forwards, it can be a very difficult and frustrating exercise. We should be sure of what we are talking about – how we define things – or time can be wasted needlessly. A simple phrase like “child care” will conjure up a different meaning to a Social Worker than to a parent or a Nurse. We all talk different languages – approach things from… Continue

Tim Howell Face to Face Hours

Hello fellow professional range youth workers, How many hours face to face do you do? Here in MK we are working towards 60%; when in West Sussex we did 40-60%. I am interested to see what happens elsewhere in the country, and whether there has been any impact of integrated working and locality working on their ability to do face to face work and what the drivers are? The union just says 10 sessions a week, 8 evenings a fortnight but doesnt explain whether a session means face to face or just a… Continue
