Are you an Openbook?

Are you an openbook? Most of us would like to think that whilst we are open we have boundaries and don't want to share our private lives with the entire world. Hopefully we counsel the young people we work with to

think before they share the intimate details of their lives with the online

world.

Some of them may be shocked that the comments, wall posts and status updates

they share over popular SNS Facebook are not as private as they…

Connected Generation 2010 notes

Thanks to Tim, Katie and the rest of the organisers of the Connected Generation conference 2010. It was a brilliant day in terms of learning and support.

2010 is my first year in attendance and as the only youth librarian present I was delighted to see that others were interested in discussing the relevance of libraries in the open space session. I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about our HeadSpace project which…

Facebook Privacy

There have been a lot of debates about Facebook Privacy in the past few weeks: Facebook are progressively changing their defaults to make things more public - which could have some big implications for youth work uses.

You can find a lot of insightful analysis over on danah boyds blog here.

However, this post is mainly to point… Continue

Making a Start on Policies

We have started working on some policies and also a request to create a social networking presence. We feel it is important to establish that projects understand what they are trying to acheive by setting up a profile or group; how they will moderate this and tackle any safety issues that arise. It has also been noticed that some of the groups run by projects that are required to use SNS by funders have very little in the way of participation from service users on their pages.…

ICT, Ethics and Young People

I ran a workshop at Friday's Connected Generation Conference looking at Ethics and ICT when working with young people.

Often when we think about how practitioners can engage with social technology, we think about 'policies' and 'procedures'. However, in the workshop we stepped back to look at the guiding ethical principles that practitioners base their work on - and how these apply to digital…

Policy or Guideline to support workers avoiding treatment discussions online

Hi all,

I'm providing consulting services with a large children's mental health agency in Toronto, Ontario. They hired me to help them develop[ their online communication strategies, guidelines, policies, procedures and tools. They want to expand how they engage youth they serve online and will be creating a "for youth, by youth" web site in which youth will offer supports and guidance for youth experiencing mental illness issues and challenges.

There is a strong treatment… Continue

Journey into Online Youth Participation

In the beginning some of our projects were utilising Facebook and myspace etc to keep in contact with children and young people connected to that project however this was

uncontrolled and poorly managed or understood and unsurprisingly this

led to problems. Thus all such activity was banned until…

Mildred Talabi replied to Mildred Talabi's discussion Email marketing - how do you do yours?

Using Creative Assessment Tools for Practitioners at Attlee Youth & Community Centre, London E1

April 11, 2013 from 9:30am to 4:30pm
BackgroundOne of the challenges of assessment processes with young people is how to secure their involvement and active participation. Only too often assessment can become something that is ‘done’ to young people (or a form that needs  to be filled in), rather than a dynamic process that puts them at the centre, something theyare involved with and have some ownership over. The assessment tools called ‘CAF Cards’  and ‘Road Sign Cards’ have been developed with young people to work with the…See More
