What would you get if you had £500 to spend on a social media toolkit? (hardware)

I'm putting together a guide for the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council on using social media as part of a youth exchange, and I wanted to include in there an idea of what sort of social media kit you could put together if you had £500 to spend.

Below is the list I've put together so far, but I was surprised to find it only comes to £440, and I think covers all the essentials I use in day-to-day social media work.

Online pornography and young people

This blog discusses topics of a sexual nature which some people may find offensive. I have been explicit about the subject matter to prevent ambiguity. I intend no offense, but want to be clear and explicit before you read the blog.

One of the areas I am currently exploring is how social media platforms can be creatively utilised to engage young people to explore and learn about their sexuality, sexual health, forms of… Continue

Why do you think it is a good idea to work with young people’s current activities as a start for developing learning opportunities?

What is your role when you are facilitating a session?

A young person approaches you for help on a particular issue outside of your remit what would you do

Name some young… Continue

Just a Handful of nails

I attended an excellent conference on collaboration recently.

There were many words used, but at the end of the day, although collaboration can take our ideas forwards, it can be a very difficult and frustrating exercise. We should be sure of what we are talking about – how we define things – or time can be wasted needlessly. A simple phrase like “child care” will conjure up a different meaning to a Social Worker than to a parent or a Nurse. We all talk different languages – approach… Continue

Social Media Training for Youth Professionals

For the last 2 years I have been researching and developing methodologies and polices in the practical application of online social media platforms to gain the views of vulnerable young people. I have successfully engaged and enabled young people to express their views online and participate with local decision makers in Devon to contribute to the delivery of Devon Children's & Young peoples Plan. Relevant information/links and docs… Continue

Your insights needed: Click Clever, Click Safe (UK Child Internet Safety Strategy)

Reposted from Tim's Blog

Cover of Click Clever, Click Safe

I blogged on Tuesday about Click Clever, Click Safe, the UK Council on Child Internet Safety’s strategy, and my belief that it misses the opportunity to frame a positive, and rights-based debate around supporting children and young people to navigate online risks.

However, in…

Using Creative Assessment Tools for Practitioners at Attlee Youth & Community Centre, London E1

April 11, 2013 from 9:30am to 4:30pm
BackgroundOne of the challenges of assessment processes with young people is how to secure their involvement and active participation. Only too often assessment can become something that is ‘done’ to young people (or a form that needs  to be filled in), rather than a dynamic process that puts them at the centre, something theyare involved with and have some ownership over. The assessment tools called ‘CAF Cards’  and ‘Road Sign Cards’ have been developed with young people to work with the…See More
