Young People in a Digital World 2010

I had a fantastic time last week at WISE KIDS 'Young People in a Digital World' conferences up in Swansea and Bangor.

The Swansea event was webcast and recorded, and is now online here.

Select 2010 conference to view the recordings, or choose 'Social Reporting' from that drop-down menu to view a number of different videos created by young social reporters working with David Wilcox.

The young reporters sum… Continue

An Intercontinental Conversation on Digital Youth Work

People are exploring Digital Youth Work all over the world - but often there are not many opportunities to bring the conversations together.

To link up some of the work going on in different places, I've been talking with Merlyn Horton of Safe Online Outreach in Canada about holding a conference call between youth workers from the UK, and workers from Canada.

The idea would be to spend about 90 minutes with up to six people… Continue

(Reposted from Tim's Blog)

[Summary: Two day course, and six-month action learning set on social media in youth work and youth participation]

Getting started with digital youth work, or with using digital tools in youth participation, can seem daunting to many. It's not enough to just talk about how digital skills… Continue

What would you get if you had £500 to spend on a social media toolkit? (hardware)

I'm putting together a guide for the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council on using social media as part of a youth exchange, and I wanted to include in there an idea of what sort of social media kit you could put together if you had £500 to spend.

Below is the list I've put together so far, but I was surprised to find it only comes to £440, and I think covers all the essentials I use in day-to-day social media work.

What would you add?… Continue

Your insights needed: Click Clever, Click Safe (UK Child Internet Safety Strategy)

Reposted from Tim's Blog

Cover of Click Clever, Click Safe

I blogged on Tuesday about Click Clever, Click Safe, the UK Council on Child Internet Safety’s strategy, and my belief that it misses the opportunity to frame a positive, and rights-based debate around supporting children and young people to navigate online risks.

However, in…

Studying youth work and social networks/social media?

A number of people have asked me recently about recommendations for reading linked to Youth Work and Social Media.

When I was working on the Youth Work & Social Networking report (which has a pretty broad bibliography of things worth looking at) I wrote up a summary of 10 Articles that had… Continue

Social Media Youth Work Policies

A theme that returned at the 'Youth Work in a Digital Age' conference today was the need for policies that support use of digital tools in youth work.

What is out there already? Do we need explicit digital youth work policies? Or are the key issues already covered by the national guidance for youth workers - such that we just need to interpret existing practice?

The policy tension

I'm often asked by youth workers about whether there is, or could be, a national… Continue

Could you write on Youth Culture and Net Culture: Online Social Practices

I've just had an e-mail drop into my inbox with a call for proposals for chapters in an upcoming book on 'Youth Culture and Net Culture: Online Social Practices'.

The brief for the book suggests that chapters might cover issues including:

# Adults' reactions towards young people's Internet use

# Youth culture in a historic perspective

# What young people are doing online; description and problematisation

# Abusive practices; cyber bullying and online… Continue

What social workers (and youth workers) need to understand about youth engagement in the network society

Up at the Connected Practice symposium in Glasgow on Monday danah boyd, US based researcher of young people's online networking - shared her insights into young people's online behaviour, along with some critical questions for youth workers and social workers into how we respond to the increase in young people's self-disclosure of information on the web.

I highly recommend taking the time to listen to the audio below -… Continue

#DYW Twittering, NewsSharing & more with Ning Applications

This week Ning (the platform this website runs on) has started letting Networks add a small number of Open Social applications direct to the network itself (previously users could add them to their own pages...).

So - to explore the possibilities I've added two applications to Youth Work Online.

Youth Engagement and Social Media Guide

I've just realised my failure to drop a link into this community to a new Wiki resource I've been working on over at http://www.practicalparticipation.co.uk/yes/.

This Youth Engagement and Social media guide is a write up of lots of different bits I've been working on recently - and I would welcome input from anyone who wants to add to it.

Skype, Three and Communicating with young people

With unlimited free Skype calls on Three I'm wondering if any youth work or youth engagement projects have explored how Skype could be used in their work.

I'm guessing (though I've not checked) this also applies to text chat (as in the Mobiles discussion at Connected Generation there was a fairly clear consensus that… Continue

Using Creative Assessment Tools for Practitioners at Attlee Youth & Community Centre, London E1

April 11, 2013 from 9:30am to 4:30pm
BackgroundOne of the challenges of assessment processes with young people is how to secure their involvement and active participation. Only too often assessment can become something that is ‘done’ to young people (or a form that needs  to be filled in), rather than a dynamic process that puts them at the centre, something theyare involved with and have some ownership over. The assessment tools called ‘CAF Cards’  and ‘Road Sign Cards’ have been developed with young people to work with the…See More
