Exploring youth engagement in a digital age

Take a look at this great example from Jon Jolly of promoting youth provision through online video:

ACC Children's & Youth Work Promo from Jon Jolly on Vimeo. What would it take for every youth service or project to have an engaging video intro like this?

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with MAS that it doesn't take too much effort, just a desire to be creative. My brother is just 18 by the way and produced the whole thing on his own with no help. It wouldn't take much to engage other young people with similar skills of interests.
I think a couple of percieved problems are Media Consent for publishing films with young people, and clubs/services assuming they've got nothing to say. I wanted to make this film to articulate what we do to the 400 people in our church who don't know or understand what we do with young people!

Loved the video and am definately exploring ways in which we can do more of this.

Hi All, just checked out Jons video, looks great, I made a video to get feedback from young people for the youth service where I work. I noticed that Jon used Vimeo, so I checked with my bosses and I have uploaded my one to vimeo. See the link http://vimeo.com/2965604. please let me have your feedback. There are a few issues with putting a link to my organisations webpage with making it available in textual format and playable in Windows media, real player and quick time, basically available to everyone no matter what the spec of their computer is. This is causing me other issues with regards to moving forward with new media and making things more interactive and fun. If you have any advice of things I can do to help with getting around restrictions that would be great.

Hey Barnabas

Just had a look - this is great. A fantastic example to give a sense of YouthWork in action :)

I've embedded it below for others to take a look at:

Positive Youth Work from Barnabas Shelbourne on Vimeo. The great thing with video on Vimeo of Blip.tv and other web-based video services like these (and YouTube etc.) is that they convert video into 'Flash Video Format' which makes it easy to view in just about any web browser as long as it has Flash Player - which most systems do.

If you need to provide downloads in different formats - then Blip.TV is particularly good at enabling that. They also have some great learning resources on creating and sharing video.

Thanks again for sharing this - and do feel most welcome to ask other questions on the network as they crop up :)

Just another quick link. I've not tried it yet - but tools like http://www.overstream.net/ might be handy if you need to subtitle videos.

Providing a transcript is probably in most cases a manual job of pasting the transcript into the page where a video is shared.

Thanks Tim, I will check those links out. I have found out that I will have to make a video with subtitles and a text version of the whole thing. This means that I have a bit more work to do for the local authority website but it also means that I can put video onto a council website. Moving forward.

Thanks for posting about mine Tim, I'm still working on developing the skills to upload stuff relatively easily. I guess the main thing is (as ever) that practice makes it easier! I'm still having trouble when I've edited stuff on another platform uploading it to youtube so I may try one of the other formats to see if I can make that work. One of the things that has changed in my practice is that now I can alomst always be seen with a camera....be it a still digital or a flip one....as you never know what might be useful to record!
